Big week for Pearl City - Top
Posted Online: Mon, Sep 21st, 2009

It was all smiles around the Pearl City pitch this weekend, as the Black Bears and Pumas completed a very successful week of rugby play.

The week opened with an in-state rivalry as Pearl City played host to Palmer of Davenport during a special Monday night rugby match.  Pearl City got off to an auspicious start conceeding penalty after penalty, and allowed Palmer easy access into their scoring third.  Unfortunatly for Palmer, they had to settle for penalty kicks.  Pearl City came storming back and solid scrummaging and line-outs allowed the Black Bears to advance and stay in the Palmer half.  Pearl City made the most of these opporunities and slowly opened up a lead on Palmer.  Pearl City continued to pressure Palmer, while Palmer continued to doggedly resist.  In the end, Pearl City's defense proved to be too much and the Black Bears pulled out the win 41-15.

Blackbears off to a fast start - Top
Posted Online: Mon, Aug 31st, 2009

It was a beautiful day for rugby both off and on the pitch Saturday for the Pearl City Blackbears.  The Blackbears played host to recent DI arrivals, the Milwaukee Harlequins on a beautiful August day at the Muscatine Turf Field.  The Blackbears cruised to victory, beating Milwaukee 76-3.  The Blackbears scored early and often after some good scrum work and mauling put the Harlequins back on their heels, and pinned them agains their own try line.  Ben Nietzel opened the scoring, taking it in from a couple meters out after the pack had moved the ball deep in Milwaukee's zone with a nice maul.  Pearl City put through two more trys from close range before moving the ball wide and bringing their backs into play as well.  In the end, the scoring was spread evenly across much of the Blackbear team.

The Harlequins coverted a nice penalty midway through the second half to notch their only points of the game.   Milwaukee played hard and were extremely tough in the scrums.  In the end, Pearl City just had a little too much experience and talent for Milwaukee to stop.  It was always going to be rough for the Harequins having to play their first D1 game on the road, against a back-to-back final four partcipant, but Milwaukee displayed great heart and played some spirted rugby.  With a little more experience, Milwaukee should look forward to some great successes at the D1 level.

MNF comes to Muscatine... - Top
Posted Online: Mon, Jun 29th, 2009

It may not be the NFL, but Muscatine will be getting a taste of live action Monday Night Football (rugby style) this Fall.

Due to a scheduleing conflict, the Pearl City Blackbears will play host to Palmer College of the Quad Cities on Monday, Septemeber 14th at 7 p.m. on the Turf at Muscatine High School.  The match will be played under the lights, and promises to be an exciting event.  Palmer and Pearl City have squared off many times, with Pearl City getting the better of Palmer last year.  It will be a hotly contested match as Palmer looks to get some payback on the Black Bears and reestablish themselves as the preminant rugby powerhouse in Iowa.

This will be a great night of cheap, local entertainment.  Be sure to put it on your calender, and watch this space for more details.
