Bears Place 1st in DI Championships

The Midwest Division I Western League Black Bear ended an undefeated fall
2008 season earning them the first place match against the Eastern League
Detroit Tradesmen. The tough, hard fought, 11 to 3 win assures the Black
Bears from Muscatine, Iowa a #1 seed in the Competitive Region 3 (CR3)
play-offs next spring.
According to American Rugby News Men’s Division I playoff action
got underway in earnest Saturday, November 8 in different parts of the
country as the Midwest and Northeast started to sort things out.
In other matches, Western League
Palmer downed Eastern League Buffalo 42-7 and Eastern League Cincinnati
edged Western League Metropolis 6-3.
Detroit played Palmer Sunday with the Tradesmen beating Palmer 42 to 7.
That match determined the Tradesmen asecond place and Palmer as the third
place seeds in the CR3.

in Midwest Play-Offs

Pearl City‘s Black Bears
competed their Fall 2008 regular season with a strong win over Metropolis
44 to 15 November 1 in Minneapolis. With that win the Pearl City Black
Bears expanded their first place standing in the Midwest Men’s Western
League Division I Conference.
November 8, the Black Bears
will go head to head with the first place Eastern League Division I winners,
Detroit Tradesmen. The winner of Match #1 becomes the number one seed
in the Competitive Region 3 Playoffs spring of 2009.
A total of five matches will
be played over the weekend between the Eastern and Western clubs. Match
#2 on Saturday pits the second place Western, Palmer against Eastern,
Buffalo and third place teams Western, Metropolis against Eastern Cincinnati’s
Wolfhounds. Sunday’s Match 4 and 5 will determine the Midwest #2
seed and #3 seed in the Competitive Region 3 Playoff.

Palmer College RFC needed a few adjustments after their defeat in a 36
to 17 match against the Bears on October 25 at MHS’s pitch. The
Pearl City Black Bears took back the number one position of the Midwest
Men’s Division I Rugby Conference Standings.
Pearl City controlled the pitch with six tries ( 5 points each), and three
conversions (2 point each), while missing several three point penalty
kicks. Palmer’s two tries, two conversions and a penalty kick were
not enough to give them any bonus point in the league standing. According
to the Midwest Leagues’ website. Scorers were: Ben Mc Gee (5), Keiki
Misepeka (10), Ali Miller (5), Ken Knutson (5), and Ryan Buhman (5), and
the conversion were booted by Bayden Morrey (4) and Andrew Suniula (2).
This was the last home match of the fall playing season. Next week, November
1 the Black Bears will travel to Minneapolis to battle the Metropolis
RFC. And the play offs begin for Division I November 8th.
The Pumas play-off season began on October 25th.

Wins Over Chicago
Pearl City RFC’s Black Bears tromped visiting Chicago Griffins 67-
10 on Saturday, October 11th. The two Division I teams met on the MHS
pitch at 7:00 PM under ideal weather conditions. Numerous fans witnessed
some hard hitting action and fantastic scoring by the white hot Black
Bears coached by Adam Friend.
Even after the winning
the match against the Griffins, the Black Bears dropped from first to
second place in the Midwest Men’s Division I Conference. Palmer
College RFC is now ranked in first place, but the Bears have a good chance
of regaining the number one slot before the play-offs when they assemble
for the October 25 rematch against Palmer on the MHS pitch. Palmer is
the last home match. On November 11 the Bears travel to rematch Metropolis
in Minneapolis.
However, the Division III Pearl City Pumas lost 26 to 32 in their match
Saturday at Waverly against the Bremmer County Bucks which dropped the
Pumas down to fifth place and moved the Bucks up to first place in the
Division III standings. Pumas will be at home on October 18th against
Iowa Falls. The match starts at 1:00 PM at the MHS pitch.
Play-offs begin for
the Midwest League Division III teams on October 25th and on November
8th for the Division I team. For more information about the play-offs

Black Bears Defeat Wisconsin
On October 4, 2008 the Pearl City RFC’s Division I Black Bears trampled
the Wisconsin RFC in Madison 93-12. The Bears are having an outstanding
Fall Season. According to the Midwest Rugby Territorial News, the Black
Bears are leading in the Men’s Division I Western League folllowed
by Palmer College, Metropolis, and Wisconsin in 2nd, 3rd, and 4threspectively.
The Pumas are ranked 3rd in the Iowa Leagues Division III men’s
teams.
The Bears will be back in Muscatine at the MHS pitch for a match against
the Chicago Griffons at 7:00 PM on Saturday, October 11th.
Pumas will play Bremmer County Bucks Rugby on October 11th on their turf
in Waverly, Iowa. The match starts at 1:00 PM. The Pumas, Pearl City RFC’s
Division III team had a Bye this past weekend.
Bears Win,
Pumas Defeated
The
Division I, Black Bears played at home against the Metropolis RFC hailing
from Minneapolis. The evening match started at 7:00 PM at the Muscatine
High School pitch. Pearl City Rugby Club’s Black Bears racked up
a 59 to 8 score against Metropolis in front enthusiastic fans filling
the bleachers and sideline.
It was a different story earlier
in the afternoon when the Division III, Pumas traveled to Cedar Rapids
in a 1:00PM match against the Headhunters, losing their match 8 to 17.
Next weekend, October 4th,
the Black Bears will travel to Madison, Wisconsin to play the Wisconsin
Rugby Club at Crossroads Park. The Pumas have a Bye Week.
On October 11, the Black Bears
will be back home on the MHS synthetic turf at 7:00 PM in Muscatine for
a match against Chicago Griffons. Pumas will engage Bremer County Rugby
(Waverly, Iowa) on their home pitch at 1:00PM.
Pearl City RFC is
mindful of the fact that the Muscatine Food pantry needs help replenishing
its shelves. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to
the home matches. The items will be donated to the Muscatine Food Pantry.
