Pearl City Rugby Club history

The "Pearl City Rugby Football Club" was founded in Muscatine, Iowa in the fall of 2001. Roy Carver III and some other brave men from the area sought to resurrect rugby in Muscatine after the collapse of the Muscatine Outlaws Rugby Club in the early 90s.  Pearl City got its start as the Quad City Irish "B" side in the All-Iowa in Iowa Falls, Iowa in the spring of 2001.  That fall, the team was provisionally admitted to the Iowa Rugby Union, and played a few matches.  The following fall, 2002, Pearl City was officially admitted into the Iowa Rugby Union and allowed to compete fully in comp.

The name "Pearl City" comes from the nickname of the city of Muscatine.  Muscatine was at one time the largest source of pearl button manufacturing in the world.  The name "Black Bears" was chosen by destiny during the inaugural season of the club.  During that season, there was a story in the local paper about a black bear being seen in the state of Iowa for the first time in ten years.  This was the same amount of time since rugby had been seen in the city of Muscatine.  The club's founding members decided the club had to be named the "Blake Bears."

Since its humble origins in 2001, Pear City has rocketed to the to of the rugby world in the United States.  Spurred on by the addition of a professional coach from Australia, Adam Friend, and an influx of raw talent from abroad,  Pearl City has had a meteoric rise through he ranks.  Coach Friend has brought many of the techniques and skills he learned as a professional footballer,  and instilled them in the Pearl City team.  Since Coach Friend's arrival three years ago, Pearl City has captured the Division III National Championship in 2005, the Division II National Championship in 2006, and made it to the elite 8 in the National tournament this year, losing a heartbreaker to eventual Nation Champions, Heyward, in a two point overtime loss.  Pearl City remains a top notch team in Division I, and hopes to improve upon their initial success from last year.  Pearl City is also very excited to reintroduce a team to Division three in the Iowa League this year, the Pearl City Pumas!
